Organist/Chancel Choir Director

​St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church is looking for a dedicated and enthusiastic Organist and Choir Director to start ASAP. A detailed job description is available below as a downloadable file.

About Our Organ

Originally built ca. 1941 by M.P. Möller, it was rebuilt in 2003 by Taylor K. Miller and includes a Zimbelstern. More information, including a full list of stops, can be found on our entry in the Pipe Organ Database.

​About Our Choir

The "small but mighty" St. Mark's Chancel Choir (SATB) performs weekly at our 11:00 Traditional Service during the Offering from September through May as well as during Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter services. Rehearsals are on Wednesdays from 7:00-8:00 PM in the Choir Room and on Sunday Mornings between services (approximately 10:00-10:45).

Currently, the Chancel Choir only performs at the special services listed above and is on hiatus from regular services pending the successful fulfillment of this position.

About The Position

Our ideal candidate is a skilled organist with a strong background in sacred and liturgical music, specifically/especially in the Lutheran tradition. They are also experienced in working with choral singers across a range of abilities and providing direction and accompaniment during rehearsals and services. The ideal candidate would also provide accompaniment on the piano as needed for special music performed by soloists/small groups throughout the church year. In addition, the ideal candidate would be local or semi-local to the Hampstead area.

The Organist and Choir Director reports to the Pastor and the Church Council. This is a part-time (~10 hrs/wk depending on practice time needed) salaried position. The Organist and Choir director must be available on Sunday mornings for the 11:00 Traditional Worship service as well as one weeknight a week for Chancel Choir rehearsal. They must also be available for special services outside of Sunday mornings, including but not limited to: Wednesday night Lenten services, weddings and funerals (unless other arrangements have been made by the relevant parties).
